Awarded quartz watch of the year in 2015, Henry London
watches are taking the world by storm, but who is Henry London and why should you invest in one of their watches? Here I explain the who, what, where, when and why, so you have all the facts.
It all began with a design duo searching for inspiration for their next project in the different districts of London. While on separate jaunts, one designer meandered her way through Portobello Market and came upon a rather dishevelled, but equally enticing find; it was a vintage Swiss made watch with the words, ‘Henry, August 1965’ inscribed on the case back.
Captivated by her find, she took it home to show it to her designer partner. Equally enamoured with the watch he decided that he wanted it too. So instead of fighting to the death, the duo decided to join forces to replicate the design, first for themselves and then for the modern market by continuing with the vintage aesthetic but having fun with the colour pallet.
Later, the brand was picked up by the Peers Hardy Group Ltd and was then presented at Basel Word 2015 to be picked up by major retailers across the globe.
Now you’re familiar with the story, let’s pick apart the reasons why you should be running out to purchase one of these must-have timepieces.
As you can tell by the story, because the founders were of opposite gender and both appreciated the design, the entire collection is gender neutral - or if you prefer, androgynous. Obviously there are some designs that do look more feminine than others; however, none of them are labelled as men’s or women’s. This is a key trend that many designers seem to be veering towards and it looks to be the future of fashion, but for now, only time will tell.
It’s obvious that the designers aren’t afraid to use a dash of colour which gives the collection a fresh look and appeal. A personal favourite of mine is the Hampstead chronograph. I love the boozy burgundy colour of the dial and the rose gold accents. The Milanese strap also makes it comfortable to wear (i.e. the hairs on your arm don’t get caught in between the links - a problem many of us men have) and you don’t have to bother with taking it in to get links added or taken away, simply adjust the placement of the clasp for a secure fit.
A nod to the vintage era of horology comes from the perfectly domed lens. This very sixties design feature gives the watch a magnificent side profile.
Henry London watches are also great if you want to add a personal touch to your watch. On the case back you will see a blank space that can be engraved with your name or whatever takes your fancy*, just like the original was inscribed with ‘Henry, August 1965’, you too can be immortalised in a watch.
And last but certainly not least, did I mention that they are incredibly affordable? There’s no need to scrimp and save for months to be able to get your hands on one of these marvels. Henry London watches range from £95 - £165 and you can find a great collection right here at House of Watches.
