Changing the face of men's health

Men of the world, lend me your Gillette’s. It’s that time of year again, when razors are doomed to get rusty and we separate the MoBros from the boys, yes’s Movember.

I have been sporting a beard now for around 7 years and have become quite fond of my hirsute beard with joining ‘stache, not only because it gives me a rather feral appearance, but the relief to refrain from the arduous task of shaving every morning, not to mention the wasted, precious minutes that could be spent in bed. Now it is time for the millions of you out there to join me.

On November 1st men across the globe (including myself), will be able to start sprouting (or shave and start again) a moustache to be proud of, along with raising funds for a worthy cause.

Movember aims to create awareness of often-ignored issues of men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health.

Frightening statistics shows that 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives, with the risk increasing with age. In total over 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK, and every hour 1 man dies of prostate cancer.

Mental health has been a huge talking point in recent months due to the death of Robin Williams, it is apparent that again 1 in 8 men are diagnosed with a common mental disorder at any one time. In 2011, a total of 6,045 people in the UK died by suicide and over three-quarters (75%) of these were men.

All of these factors are why we must help fight cancer and raise awareness of mental health. By participating and talking through our moustaches to each other, we can help. Please follow the links embedded in the article to help you spot the signs and prevent men’s health issues.

It’s not just you gents who can get involved, there is also an army of Mo Sista’s spreading the word. Each Mo Sista encourages the men in their life to sign up and grow a ‘stache to help raise awareness.

Even prestigious watchmakers Maurice Lacroix are getting involved - This year for the second time running - Maurice Lacroix has teamed up with the Movember global health charity to produce a limited collection of special edition, Ponto S Diver watches with a recognisable moustache print in the centre.

During November Maurice Lacroix will also be creating a network of teams across the globe lead by their ambassadors, all the while spreading the word and raising vital funds in aid of men’s health.

Welsh former sprint and hurdling athlete, Colin Jackson, will be taking his place as the UK team captain. Jackson will be documenting his ‘stache growth and encouraging men up and down the country to join his Mo’rice Lacroix UK team.

Maurice Lacroix will be creating 3 unique designs for this occasion, the first will feature a white Movember ‘stache on the dial and will be limited to 14 pieces, all sold exclusively on the Maurice Lacroix website, with profits going to the Movember men’s health charity.

The next collection of 14 piece limited edition watches, will feature an orange ’stache and will only be available as a reward to the most successful fundraiser on each national team.

Finally, from the 14 proud winners 1 “International Man of Movember” will be crowned, subsequently becoming the face of the campaign. For this fine gentleman, Maurice Lacroix has crafted a special electric blue Ponter S Driver, which will also be presented to the Movember CEO and co-founder of Movember Adam Garone.

So the question is, will you be sprouting a hairy ribbon this Movember? If so you will be one of the millions of men throughout the world, twisting the ends of their tickler on November 30th,, go on be a sport and don’t forget to donate.
